...Quake Wars takes the Earth vs Strogg conflict seen in the second and fourth Quake games and fills out the backstory. While those previous games had you taking on the Strogg on their own planet, this one goes back to when the Strogg first invaded Earth. Now, for the first time, you'll play as a full-on Strogg soldier or as a GDF defender and will battle it out for control of the planet...

...The game is being created by UK developer Splash Damage under the watchful eye of id Software; previously, Splash Damage was simply a mod team, but later on they got the chance put together the multiplayer mode for Return to Castle Wolfenstein and then created the very popular free online shooter Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Finding new sports for Mario Bros to take up is getting seriously tricky. Let's see what out favorite Italian stereotype has left to play, shall we? How about "Mario Angling"? That might be fun, but we'll save that one for the Wii-mote. "Donkey Kong Zorbing"? Nah, too much like Super Monkey Ball. Ok, got it: "Princess Peach Buzkashi Party". See how the word "party" makes it all seem more fun and accessible? ...

...One last problem in the presentation is how much time Super Mario Hoops spends in transition after every basket. It takes a while to load and skip replays, bogging down otherwise quick gameplay. After you've waited through your hundredth highlight, you'll want to just be able to turn replays off. And hey! Guess what? You can't.

But you can always turn on the "rent" option. Super Mario Bros Hoops is a decent, little game that's a bit too decent and way too little. It's good for a laugh or two, but it fails to capture the fast-paced fun factor of previous Mario sports titles. Super Mario Bros Caber Toss, here I come!

The holiday rush means that a lot of games fall by the wayside in favor of more glitzy, big budget affairs. It's a shame, cause a lot of these games are developed by small studios that really don't have a sliver of the marketing might of a big house...and yet, oftentimes their games are just as good if not better! Take for example Switchball, an XBLA game developed by Atomic Elbow.

Switchball has you controlling a marble, rolling it over obstacles to reach a gyrocopter finish line. It's very much in the spirit of Marble Madness, albeit with a focus on puzzle solving rather than racing to the bottom and...
