...While most fighters are primarily multiplayer centric, Tekken Dark Resurrection for the PSP offers up a healthy single player game component that should keep you playing when there are no friends online to be found. Story mode remains, as you're able to play as every character in a series of nine Tekken battles to learn everyone's backstory. Even cooler, each of these ends with a high quality FMV to close out the game story. Some of these are pretty standard, cool poses, lots of explosions and so forth. The best, though are the ones that don't take themselves too seriously. Seeing Panda in this game as the leader of a multinational corporation getting proposed to by Kuma the bear may be worth the price of admission on its own...

Wolfenstein is being created for simultaneous release on the PC, PS3, and 360 - previously, id as well as other PC-centric developers have moved away from their home platform and towards consoles, citing piracy as well as difficulty with sales overall as the reason. Some thought that meant that id was abandoning the PC altogether or intended on tossing together a sloppy console-like port as an afterthought, but if Wolfenstein is the standard that they're setting for themselves, I don't think we have much to worry about. id's own Kevin Cloud said that his home platform is still the PC and his playtesting sessions with this game take place on PC. For the demo I saw it on the 360, but Raven's Eric Biessman said that they could have brought the PC version too except that they didn't feel like bringing a gaming-based desktop PC with them on the plane, and that the 360 is more portable in that regard.

pressed on, though, and asked about the game engine - it's based originally on the Quake 4 engine but in the four years since that was released, Raven's changed the engine enough for Wolfenstein that it's pretty much separate technology by now. UK developer Splash Damage is a pioneer in multiplayer gaming, even if most of the thousands of online FPS players have never heard of them. These are the guys that developed the multiplayer portion of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, the Activision title that was released for free a few years ago. Activision pulled a wonderful PR move in releasing this as a stand-alone game, and it's been a favorite of many FPS gamers since.

Now, Splash Damage is getting their chance to make their own multiplayer game that's not just intended to be tacked onto something else. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars combines Splash Damage's unique brand of FPS action with the sci-fi world of Quake to make something that's truly unique. The team at Splash Damage is still largely a bunch of modmakers without true retail game experience.
