In a bit of a shocking announcement, Microsoft announced just this week that Doom would be hitting Xbox Live Arcade, well, instantly. In the same way that Steve Jobs announces a new iPod and they're in stores right away, Doom was ready and waiting for folks to download it on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

The classic PC game is the first FPS to hit Live Marketplace, and it's definitely one of the more polished titles on the service, offering up all the old school gory gameplay you remember, along with some nifty new extras...

...Thankfully, you get a lot more than just the single-player. Doom allows for people to hop on Live and play online co-op (through all the single-player levels) or deathmatch (through all the classic DM maps). Our experience playing on Live was reasonably flawless, as we were quickly able to hop into a game and start blasting...

...The majority of this game is shooting. The visuals in this game are pretty impressive at times, but this one still winds up being a bore almost from the start. The action is just plain dull, and your enemies are about as stupid as they can get. ...The game does follow the movie's plot loosely, but you'll find that the missions you need to do are generally less exciting than in the movie due to the rather dull action sequences. From playing as the Autobot Bumblebee whose mission is to protect Mikaela and Sam (and his great-grandfather's glasses that have the encoded location of the "Allspark" on them) to just plain destroying half of a city as a Decepticon, the events in the game do follow the movie but are decidedly more disjointed and often have you doing things repeatedly just so that the overall length of the game is increased...

...Transformers does have a few redeeming moments, like when you get to play as Scorponok, but there are just way too many long stretches of mediocrity for me to be able to recommend this one. The PS3 version looks great in screenshots, but it plays like a budget game and yet still sports the full $59.99 price tag....
